    • They defied medical expectations and now live life to the full in Cardiff

Eight-year-old conjoined twins from Cardiff are nominated for a young person award in the national awards of Wales.

Marieme and Ndeye Ndiaye are nominated for the young person award in this year’s St David’s Awards.

The twins are believed to be the only growing conjoined twins in Europe and have exceeded doctors' expectations regarding their lifespan.

The twins came to the UK when they were 8 months old for expert medical help and were not expected to survive.

Now they have made Cardiff their home, have been granted UK citizenship and with the help of medical staff and their school community are living life to the full.

The girls integrated into mainstream schooling and society, forming numerous friendships. Despite facing significant health challenges, they strive to lead a life typical for 8-year-olds.

On the St David’s Awards website it states: “From the day they were born Marieme and Ndeye have battled to survive. The unique way they are joined together means they cannot be separated and are dependent on each other to live.

“Especially Marieme who is relying on her sister to get most of the oxygen she needs to survive. They are vulnerable and at any moment their health could take a devastating turn for the worse, but they never let anything hold them back.

“Every day the twins inspire those around them with their unwavering courage and whatever life brings they never give up and vow to always celebrate life.”

The Young Person Award will be given to an exceptional and inspirational young person or group of up to 19 years of age in any field in Wales.

Along with the twins, nominees include youth worker, Dylan Buller and young carer Olly Williams.

It is one of 11 awards - the winners are decided upon by the First Minister and their advisers.

The awards ceremony will take place on March 27.
