Cardiff Council has approved planning permission for a new grocery shop in Grangetown.

The local authority’s planning committee approved plans for a garage on the corner of Mardy Street and Merches Place to be converted into a shop.

The plans would see the single storey building next to United Pentecostal Church renovated and extended to a floor area measuring around 22 square metres.

The documents submitted on behalf of the applicant, Mr Vishnu Varsani, show that the proposed opening hours are between 8am and 7pm seven days a week.

Existing doors onto Merches Place would be replaced with a roller shutter door - with pedestrian access via this entrance.

Two nearby residents opposed the plans, citing that they were worried about noise disturbance and “vermin from waste storage".

They also raised concerns that the new shop will have an impact upon parking which is “already a problem” as well as stating that there are already “adequate existing grocery stores within the area”.

Cardiff Council approved the plans on January 27, subject to conditions.

The documents can be read on the council’s planning portal using reference 24/02403/FUL.
