South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s cadet unit was visited by a Welsh Government minister this March who praised the group as “truly inspiring”.

Jayne Bryant MS, Welsh Government cabinet secretary for housing and local government, visited Ely fire etation on March 10 to visit South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s (SWFRS) fire cadet unit.

During her visit, Ms Bryant had the chance to witness the skills have developed over the course of their two-year programme.

The cadets demonstrated essential firefighting techniques, including ladder hoisting for casualty rescue and using hoses to extinguish a simulated industrial bin fire.

Ms Bryant said: “It was wonderful to visit Ely Fire Station and meet the Fire Cadets and their instructors to hear firsthand about their experiences with the programme and see them in action.

“Their teamwork, enthusiasm, and support for one another was truly inspiring and I am confident that we have some excellent future firefighters among the Ely unit.

“It is crucial that children have safe spaces to learn new skills and socialise and I am so thankful to SWFRS and their dedicated instructors for providing such a nurturing and supportive environment in the local community.”

Fire Cadet Instructor, Robert Picton, said: “As fire cadets, these young individuals are treated as trainee firefighters, learning core emergency responder skills while engaging in activities at their local fire station. They are expected to show discipline and commitment, mirroring the dedication of our firefighters. This prepares them for success in life, whether they choose to pursue a career in the fire service or not.”

More information on the programme can be found on the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s website.
