EE has applied to install a 20m mast in Pontcanna Fields car park
Documents say it will improve signal, provide 4G now and upgrade to 5G later
It’s in the consultation stage and can be viewed online using reference: 25/00520/PRAP
Cardiff Council has received a planning application for a phone mast to be built in Pontcanna.
EE Ltd has applied for planning permission to erect a 20m pole in Pontcanna Fields pay and display car park.
The planning documents state that the mast, along with other equipment such as antennas and dishes, would provide EE customers with 4G technology and then 5G at a later date.
The documents add: “This mast is to cover an extensive amount of customer complaints regarding coverage and/or capacity in this area which results in dropped calls, delayed messages and poor to non-existent data usage at this area.”
It continues to explain that the location was chosen as the site “is away from the residential properties in what is largely a residential area”, has a “good level of existing vegetation” to provide “screening” and is near to “a number of commercial properties”.
Cllr Leonora Thomson, who represents Riverside Ward, wrote to the applicant and said: “Thank you for consulting us about the proposed telecoms apparatus. I welcome this development as better phone signal is much needed in the area, and this is a good place for it.”
The application is out for consultation until 25 March.
You can read the full application on the council’s planning website using the reference 25/00520/PRAP

If someone is planning to build something that needs planning permission, they have to send an application to their Local Planning Authority - that’s Cardiff Council
The council’s planning department and planning committee are responsible for deciding on loft extensions to tall buildings, housing estates to football stadiums
Major developments require approval require planning committee approval whereas home extensions can be approved by the planning department
The planning committee is made up of councillors but works independently
It can take around eight weeks for a decision to be made but longer for applications that need an Environmental Impact Assessment
A planning decision is usually valid for five years, unless it has a specific time limit on it
