The number of requests for animals to be rehomed at Cardiff Dogs Home “continues to be high” a councillor has said.

The home, located on Penarth road in Llandough, receives around 40 requests per week from people “in difficult personal circumstances” according to Cllr Norma Mackie, cabinet member for waste, street scene and  environmental services.

Cllr Mackie also told council in January that 430 dogs have been taken in by the home so far during the 2024/25 financial year.

She added: “Officers are having more interaction with housing officers, social work teams, support workers and people fleeing domestic violence, who are all looking for the Dogs Home to take dogs from families and people at risk and in need.”

Building work will take place at the home in March 2025 to extend the small kennels by Capital Construction, who are giving staff time and materials free of charge to support the Dogs Home.

There is also a possibility that “secure exercise areas” for dogs across the city could be created.

Cllr Mackie added: “These exercise areas would provide dog owners with safe and accessible areas for dogs to exercise off a lead and have the potential to bring in significant additional income.”
