A new swimming pool is set to open at Pentwyn leisure centre at an estimated cost of £4.9m.
Customers will be able to swim again at the facility for the first time in five years after the pool was shut to customers in March 2020.
Cardiff Council appointed a contractor, Andrew Scott Ltd, to work on the new 25 metre swimming pool which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
It will feature a split raising floor, children's wet play area and also see the changing facilities and reception area refurbished.
The centre, on Bryn Celyn road, will remain open to the public throughout the construction period.
Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events, Cllr Jennifer Burke, said: "The start of work on the swimming pool is a significant step towards fulfilling our long-standing commitment to fully re-opening Pentwyn Leisure Centre.
"The importance of the leisure centre and particularly the swimming pool has always been clear and, although getting to this point has taken longer than hoped, an affordable, sustainable leisure centre for the community has always been the end goal. That is exactly what we are now delivering."

The pool will feature an adaptable, moving floor - which means the depth of the water can be changed - and be used for swimming and activities such as water jets and sprinklers, blasters, water tunnels, small slides and tipping buckets.
The energy performance of the centre will be upgraded through roof mounted solar panels mounted on the roof and an air source heat pump.
These new installations will also educe the overall costs of running the centre and improve the carbon performance of the building, in line with the council's One Planet Cardiff climate change commitments.
The leisure centre also includes a gym, fitness classes, children's activities, a sports hall and an outdoor 3G pitch.
