A man who robbed a supermarket at knife-point has been jailed.

Leon Carpin, 34, from Pontprennau, robbed the Lidl store in Caxton place, Pentwyn, on Saturday, 9 November.

Carpin, 34, of Clos Y Fynnon, stole around £250 after asking a checkout assistant to open a till while holding a knife.

He was charged and pleaded guilty to robbery, possessing a knife in a public place and possessing crack cocaine.

Carpin was jailed for five years and six months at Cardiff Crown Court on February 28.

South Wales Police were able to identify Carpin after the robbery was filmed by a customer.

Officers found him hiding in an attic just a few minutes walk away from the Lidl store.

He was still in possession of some of the cash he stole and 1.6g of crack cocaine, which officers suspect he bought with the stolen money.

What happened during the incident?

Carpin entered the shop at lunchtime on Saturday, 9 November.

According to South Wales Police, staff were watching him closely as he was behaving “erratically” in the busy shop.

Minutes later, he whispered ‘open the till’ into a shop worker’s ear while brandishing a knife.

Carpin then repeatedly asked the checkout assistant to open the till.

He is warned the police have been called and he frantically presses buttons to open the till himself.

Eventually the till is opened for him and the robber makes off with approximately £250.
